Abstract

Introducing to Ivane Gvaramadze’s works, we came across a very interesting question about teaching the Georgian language. In XIX cen-tury Georgians in Samtskhe - Javakheti, were ethnic minorities and so raising the problem about teaching the Georgian language was essen-tial. I think we have no right not to speak about a very important event according to which students finishing Georgian schools learnt Armenian and students finishing non Georgian schools learnt Georgian on the first course of every faculty at the Javakheti (Akhalkalaki) Branch of Iv.Javakhishvili State University in 2002-2005. This fact itself and teach-ing approaches highlight the importance of the issue even in the XXIc. and shows that Ivane Gvaramadze’s ideas are still alive and don’t lose its aim and importance. The elements of bilingual teaching that are observed in Ivane Gva-ramadze’s pedagogical works are still very relevant for today. As we see, pedagogical ideas and approaches in the works of a great patriot are almost one century ahead of the present.
